Here are some tips to help you manage:

  • Share night duty, even one parent doing the pre-midnight feed so the other one can get an unbroken chunk of sleep.
  • Take any nap you can. Rest when your baby is resting.
  • Ignore clock at night. If you know it is 3am and you are awake you will only get more stressed that you are not being allowed to sleep.
  • Set realistic sleep goals for yourself and your child. Find out how much sleep is recommended for your baby’s age and work out how much sleep you realistically need to function and work out how you can get that amount.
  • Leave house untidy if you need to – remember it is not a priority when you have a new baby.
  • Know that things take longer, you are not just getting yourself ready but a baby and all that goes with them (the entire house it seems sometimes) so take away the stress by adding an extra 15 minutes to get all those things together.
  • Cut down meal expectations. You don’t need to be preparing a 5 course meal every day.  Do the basics or spend one day cooking for the week and freeze meals.   This way you will have more time to rest.
  • If you don’t feel like visitors postpone to another day or if someone is coming at lunchtime ask them to bring something instead of tiring yourself out having to go to the shops and then preparing something.
